Henry George Gawthorn
(1879-1941)

Henry George Gawthorn was born in Northampton, England in 1879. He originally trained to be an architect at Regent Street Polytechnic in London; his talent earned him numerous medals and awards. Later he shifted his focus to pictorial art, most notably poster design. He wrote several books on poster design and became well known for the travel posters he created for L.N.E.R (London & North Eastern Railway). Hawthorn occasionally included a self-portrait in his posters, complete with since-nez and a panama hat.
